Wind Mitigation FAQ
Everything Northeast Florida homeowners ask about wind mitigation inspections, the OIR‑B1‑1802 form, and how premium credits work. For the full service description, see the wind mitigation inspection page.
The basics
4 questionsA focused inspection that documents a Florida home's hurricane-resistant construction features on the state's OIR‑B1‑1802 form. Insurers use it to apply windstorm premium credits under Florida law (§627.711). Full service details on the wind mitigation page.
No — it's voluntary and it exists to help you. Without the form on file, your carrier prices windstorm coverage as if your home had no qualifying features. The inspection is how qualifying features become credits.
Most visits run 30–45 minutes on site: attic access for the deck and connection documentation, exterior photos of each slope and opening, and permit verification. The signed report is typically delivered within 24 hours.
Almost always worth it — new construction typically has every qualifying feature, but carriers don't apply credits without the signed form. One inspection usually documents to strong credits and lasts through multiple renewals.
The seven features
5 questionsRoof covering, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall connection, roof geometry, secondary water resistance, opening protection, and the building-code/permit date. Each is documented separately — see the feature-by-feature breakdown.
It varies by home and carrier, but roof-to-wall connections (clips versus wraps versus toe-nails) and opening protection are commonly the largest levers — and roof geometry (hip versus gable) is the one you can't change without a new roof.
A sealed roof-deck barrier — peel-and-stick membrane or closed-cell foam at the deck seams — that keeps water out if the covering fails in a storm. Standard in newer construction, increasingly added during re-roofs, and worth asking your roofer about before the next replacement.
Very likely — a re-roof to current code typically upgrades several features at once (covering, deck attachment, often secondary water resistance). A new inspection after any re-roof is one of the highest-value moves in Florida insurance.
Rated shutters and impact glazing can qualify — the form distinguishes protection levels, and every opening matters: partial protection is documented differently than full. We photograph ratings labels and installations per opening.
Credits & savings
4 questionsIt genuinely varies — by carrier, policy, home features, and location. Coastal high-exposure homes tend to see the largest effect because more of their premium is windstorm-rated. What we control is complete documentation of every qualifying feature; the credit decision is the carrier's. We don't promise savings figures — be cautious of anyone who does.
Yes — the OIR‑B1‑1802 is the statewide form every Florida carrier uses, completed on the current 2026 edition and signed under Florida License #HI‑14111.
The form documents qualifying features to apply credits — it isn't a condition report on your roof and doesn't work like one. If a feature doesn't qualify, you simply don't receive that credit. Questions about a specific situation? Ask us before booking.
Send the signed form to your agent (or have us deliver it directly at scheduling). The carrier's underwriter reads the form and applies the qualifying credits to the windstorm portion of your premium — typically visible at the next policy period.
Scheduling & validity
4 questionsGenerally five years in Florida, so one inspection typically covers multiple renewal cycles. Upgrading a feature mid-window (a re-roof, new shutters) is worth a re-inspection to capture the improved credits early.
Wind mitigation is flat-priced — current figures are on the pricing page. It bundles at a discount with the 4-Point and roof certification in the insurance bundle.
Attic access (closets and garage hatches clear), access to the exterior, and any permit or shutter documentation you have — helpful but not required, since we verify permits ourselves. You don't need to be home if access is arranged.
